This photo was recently submitted as an example of white-washed Katara cosplay. The original can be found here. Unfortunately, this is actually an example of brown face, as in descriptions of her other Katara cosplays (here and here) she mentions tanning for the cosplay.
This is what the cosplayer’s natural skin tone is:
Just thought I’d submit a clarification, as I’ve seen pictures of this cosplayer around a lot, exalted as an amazing Katara (and now Korra) cosplayer, despite the brownface.
Okay, no. I’m sorry but I completely disagree with this person. I believe this cosplayer was just trying to accurately portray Katara. She wanted to be Katara as much as any other Katara cosplayer wants to and she put in the effort. She even spent money on tanner, not to offend anyone but so she could be accurate. If you hang around me, you’ll know that people who cosplay Katara with their natural red hair or their natural blonde hair make me upset. I honestly believe this person was just upset with this cosplayer for no just reason and is taking out anger on this perfectly capable and great cosplayer. So no. I don’t believe she’s white-washing, I believe she’s trying to cosplay.
Honestly, I do judge cosplayers as people judge my cosplays. But I’m not going to slap it all over the internet or go up to a person and tell them they’re terrible because they wanted to dress up as someone of a different color. I’m going to keep it to myself and my friends. I have no authority to tell someone that they’re being racist if they had nothing but good intentions. There’s a fine line between spreading awareness and just condemning people. This original post was just so full of hate, I can’t even take it seriously.
